Craig Jones
MBChB | MRes (Dist) | MD | FRCS Urol
I am a Consultant Urological Surgeon with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of urological cancers, with particular interest in prostate cancer. I take a personalised, risk-adapted approach to care, aiming to optimise both cancer control and quality of life for my patients. My clinical practice includes multiparametric MRI scan interpretation, performing targeted transperineal prostate biopsies under local anaesthetic, as well as robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy to minimise side effects and support a faster recovery. Where appropriate I perform nerve sparing prostatectomy and utilise the "hood technique", which has been shown to help improve continence outcomes.
I manage the full spectrum of prostate cancer—from early-stage disease to advanced cancer that has spread beyond the prostate. I am passionate about survivorship care, recognising that men often live long and fulfilling lives during and after prostate cancer treatment. My approach focuses on supporting patients at every stage of their journey.
I studied medicine at The University of Manchester, graduating in 2013. During my undergraduate career I was awarded a Master of Research (MRes) in Oncology with Distinction. I completed my surgical training in General and Urological surgery in the North-West of England and was awarded the Keith Yeates Gold Medal for outstanding performance in the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons examination (FRCS Urol).
Alongside my training I carried out research focusing on the musculoskeletal effects of treatments for advanced prostate cancer as part of the STAMPEDE Trial Translational Research Group and Genito Urinary Cancer Research Group at The Christie Hospital, supervised by Prof Noel Clarke. I was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2023.
I have published research in several high-impact, peer-reviewed journals (Lancet Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Annals of Oncology) and regularly present my work at both national and international conferences. My academic work aims to translate scientific findings into meaningful improvements in patient care, and I remain actively involved in ongoing clinical research and innovation in prostate cancer treatment. I am an active member of the STAMPEDE and STAMPEDE2 Trial Management Groups.
In addition to my clinical and academic work, I serve as the Early Diagnosis Lead for Urological Cancers at the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, collaborating closely with primary care teams to improve diagnostic pathways and outcomes for patients. I am also a Prostate Cancer UK Clinical Champion.
My NHS practice is based at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport NHS Trust. I am also a Consultant at Macclesfield General Hospital and Tameside General Hospital, where I serve as the Deputy Clinical Director.
I live in Cheadle Hulme with my wife and two children.
